The Solar-a-thon was an international solar energy educational event in which children in countries around the globe constructed the same solar-powered toy model (a sunflower) on the same day–during one complete revolution of our planet on its axis. After having completed an internship at a solar energy non-profit, and learning how solar energy education was carried out in elementary schools in Germany, I founded the Solar-a-thon so that children could experience international team spirit and simultaneously be inspired by the potential of solar energy. On the 21st of June 2015, participants in the U.S. and 16 countries constructed their solar models and were filmed and photographed at noon in their time zones. During the event, I communicated with them over Skype to ensure that their models were working (the flowers rotate thanks to solar energy) and that there was continuous solar sunflower coverage around the world for 24 hours.
